Summary:Title screen
This work presents research findings on the micro-explosive breakup of two-liquid water-in-fuel droplets based on biodiesel and its blends with traditional diesel fuel. Biodiesel samples of various origins were synthesized from rapeseed oil, tall oil fatty acids, and distilled tall oil. The breakup behavior of two-liquid immiscible droplets and emulsions was determined during convective heating in a wide range of gas flow temperatures (up to 750 K). Biodiesel synthesized from tall oil fatty acids emerged as the most promising feedstock, yielding child droplets 25–30% smaller than those from other biodiesels, thereby maximizing the post-breakup evaporation surface area. Furthermore, the use of water-in-fuel emulsions was shown to reduce environmental impact: NOx emissions decreased by 10% for diesel fuel and by 18% for biodiesel-based emulsions, while CO2 concentrations decreased by 3.5% and 9.5%, respectively. These findings provide critical data for optimizing spray combustion technologies and integrating renewable biofuels into existing energy systems
