This work introduces a comprehensive approach combining PBF-EB-fabricated low-modulus β-type Ti–56Nb gyroid scaffolds with RF-magnetron-sputtered Mg-, Sr-, and MgSr-substituted hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings with thickness of 770–1000 nm, as determined from SEM cross-sectional analysis, enabling a systematic assessment of how single and dual ionic substitutions impact coating properties. A highly ordered, crystalline and molecular structure of the deposited coatings is revealed via FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TEM. Mechanical nanoindentation studies showed Sr–HA possessed superior hardness (7 GPa), outperforming Mg–HA (4.5 GPa) and MgSr–HA (5.1 GPa), with distinct failure mechanisms linked to structural differences. Improved corrosion resistance for all coatings is revealed, with Sr-HA exhibiting the most stable, controlled degradation profile. Ab initio density functional theory modeling elucidated the fundamental structure–property relationships of the doped coatings, predicting and validating Sr-induced lattice stabilization versus Mg-driven defect formation and cohesive weakening. Biological evaluations on coated gyroid scaffolds demonstrated Mg accelerated early cell activation, Sr enhanced osteogenic maturation, and the dual MgSr–HA coating elicited the most synchronized and robust osteogenic response. The results show that Mg and Sr exert complementary but fundamentally distinct influences, and that MgSr co-doping yields the most functionally advantageous coating for Ti–Nb implants
