| Summary: | Title screen This study investigates the relationship between the microstructural condition of high-carbon T8 steel and the corrosion inhibition performance of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Steel specimens were heat-treated at 550 °C and 700 °C (15 min, water quenching, tempering at 200 °C for 2 h). ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized via microwave-assisted synthesis (MAS, 87.2 ± 2.7 nm) and nano-spray drying synthesis (NSDS, 49.6 ± 1.3 nm). Heat treatment at 700 °C induces substantial softening (168.1-181.8 HV) and extreme carbon redistribution (0.20-5.44 wt%). Although it increases the corrosion rate from 0.34 ± 0.03 to 0.75 ± 0.11 mg s−1 cm−2, it enhances the inhibition efficiency of ZnO to 88.9% in 0.1 M NaCl and 50.7% in acidic media. Electrochemical analysis reveals that ZnO acts primarily as a cathodic inhibitor in neutral chloride environments via physical barrier formation, while exhibiting limited stability in acids due to proton-assisted dissolution. The finest NSDS-ZnO particles achieve inhibition efficiencies rising from 15.7% on untreated steel to 50.7% on 700 °C-treated specimens. These findings establish that microstructural features conventionally associated with reduced corrosion resistance serve as preferential anchoring sites for nanoparticle adsorption, enabling the formation of robust protective films Текстовый файл AM_Agreement |
