Summary:The present work is a study of Mn-doped MgAl2O4 luminescent ceramics fabricated by arc plasma synthesis. As a result, polycrystalline materials with a narrow “green” emission band (λmax = 520 nm, FWHM ∼32 nm) and high photoluminescence efficiency (up to 7.2 %) were obtained. It was found that the optimal synthesis parameters (current 140 A, time 60 s, supplied energy ∼850 kJ) provide a uniform distribution of Mn2+ in the tetrahedral positions of the spinel, while excess energy leads to degradation of the luminescent centers. X-ray phase and Raman analyses confirmed the formation of a pure spinel phase with a high degree of cationic disorder. An inverse correlation was found between the green luminescence of Mn2+ (λem = 520 nm) and the weak infrared radiation (λem = 760 nm). The possible nature of emission properties of Mn-doped MgAl2O4 ceramics was discussed in detail
