Experimental and theoretical research findings are reported on the characteristics of micro-explosive fragmentation of droplets containing water and aviation fuel components. Compositions with n-heptane, n-decane, n-dodecane and kerosene surrogate were used. Micro-explosive fragmentation delay times, duration and outcomes (secondary fragment sizes and increase in the evaporation surface area) of droplets were determined. These characteristics were compared with equivalent ones for raw and oxidized kerosene, rapeseed oil and diesel fuel. A verified mathematical model was used to predict the characteristics of micro-explosive fragmentation of fuel droplets containing up to 10 % water with initial sizes ranging from 10 µm to 1 mm and at a gas temperature between 500 K and 2000 K. Conditions were identified when it is appropriate to use model compositions based on components with dominant concentrations to predict the fragmentation characteristics of aviation fuels. It was also established when the precise composition of fuels should be taken into account
