The trend in the development of terminology and theories of terminological planning, designated by the author of the publication as a “social turn”, is studied. The “social turn” is understood as the study of the growing role of social factors in their influence on the implementation of terminological activities that affect all aspects of the latter: linguistic, semantic, communicative, etc. The article focuses on the linguistic and semantic aspects of terminological activities, which leads to the formation of new - sociolinguistic and sociosemantic - approaches in this area. The article aims to determine the presence and forms of manifestation of the “social turn” in the theories of terminological planning, as well as to clarify the degree of its influence on the semantic and linguistic aspects of terminological activities and theories of terminological planning. The author states that the current situation in the field of terminology is a consequence of the general state of affairs in the field of semantics associated with the emergence of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s concept of “meaning as use”, which led to numerous discussions in the field of analytic philosophy and affected neighboring subject areas (linguistics, semiotics, cognitive science, terminology, etc.). The range of approaches is so wide that it can be presented as polar in relation to the problem of the meaning of a linguistic expression by Vsevolod Ladov (Frege versus Wittgenstein), as a compromise for Jerrold Katz, as a diverse one for Valery Surovtsev (Frege and Wittgenstein deal with different aspects of the problem of meaning: in logic (a stable sign system) and in a social context (a dynamic and complex sign system)). Terminology is a practice whose framework includes a combination of different aspects of the problem of meaning (stable and dynamic), which have to be combined in the process of terminological activities. The general theory of terminology (Eugen Wuster) worked out a stable aspect of terminological planning quite qualitatively by forming a system for establishing meaning through a rigid scheme: one concept - one term. Whereas the dynamic aspect is missed in this theory, and its implementation is presented in other theories of terminological planning: the communicative theory of Maria Teresa Cabre, the sociocognitive theory of Rita Temmerman and Koen Kerremans, the frame theory of Pamela Faber, the socioterminological theory of Felix Gaudin. The sociolinguistic approach and its necessity are due to the variety of social factors influencing the language and the impossibility of presenting it within the framework of one theory. The sociosemantic approach is formed as a result of assessing the influence of social aspects on the semantic components of linguistic expressions (including terminological expressions). The key semantic unit in the terminology is the concept; therefore researchers first of all turn to this subject. The author states that the sociosemantic approach is still in its infancy and there are not so many works within its framework. Nevertheless, such semantic units as the “social concept” by Heribert Picht and the “nomadic concept” by Catherine Greene are analyzed, which outline the general characteristics of the influence of social factors on the domain of meanings (transdisciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, normativity, ideological and religious determinism, the presence of a life cycle concept, etc.). Thus, the presence of the indicated trend and the high degree of its influence on the subject of terminological activities and the content of theories of terminological planning are confirmed.
