Summary:Title screen
The arc plasma synthesis method was employed to produce the MgAl2O4:xCr3+ (x = 0.01–1 wt%) luminescent ceramics. Structural (XRD), morphological (SEM, optical microscopy) and spectroscopic analyses were conducted to investigate the influence of Cr2O3 concentration on the phase composition of ceramics, the unit cell parameters of MgAl2O4:Cr3+ and their luminescent properties. It was established that the formation of spinel occurs within just 5 s of arc plasma synthesis, while the time required to complete melting and the production of a hemispherical spinel product is 25–30 s. Increasing the Cr2O3 concentration up to 0.25 wt % enhances the photoluminescence efficiency, after which a gradual decrease is observed. The relationship between photoluminescence (PL) efficiency and temperature was also indicated. This study demonstrates that the arc plasma melting method has potential for the rapid synthesis of MgAl2O4:Cr3+ luminescent ceramics
