The second article of the cycle dwells on two of the five features of the concept besovstvo in Dostoevsky’s The Devils - spinning and rush-down, which reveal the presence of the concept in the time and space of the novel. The rush-down feature is introduced with the metaphorical image of the sleigh rushing down the hill. One of the five excerpts revealing the feature is located at the beginning of the novel, the others -in the climax, in the description of the governesses’ ball, where besovstvo absorbing the society is represented most actively. All the excerpts play an important role in the plot organization. Representing the concept of besovstvo with the feature of rush- down the author denotes the largest scale of besovstvo as a social disease, indicates the characters’ responsibility for this, and emphasizes the frowziness of the space. The feature of spinning is an important feature of the concept of besovstvo in the Russian literary culture. In The Devils, it forms the basis that connects the other features of besovstvo in the novel (end of time, chaos and rush-down as a result of spinning, loss of the values). It is represented less often than the others (in three fragments of the introduction and the climax), but it is represented implicitly revealing the source of the false ideas and actions leading to the tragic consequences. At the same time, represented at the beginning, it “tunes” in the readers for the adequate perception of the events in the novel through the epigraph from Pushkin’s The Captain’s Daughter. It helps the readers see the novel’s events through the Russian historical and social disturbance. The further verbalization of the feature in Petrusha’s words and in the episode of the ball reveals the mechanisms of spreading disturbance via the ill-will of particular characters and by the crowd’s need for bread and circuses. Two manifestations of the diabolic spinning are related to episodes characterizing the generation of the fathers and the main revolutionary ideologist of besovstvo. Here the feature of spinning turns out to be the most important characteristic of some characters of the novel, emphasizing their responsibility for spreading besovstvo. The last episode revealing the feature of spinning - the governesses’ ball - demonstrates the scale of the final tragedy where besovstvo brings all the members of the town community under control. Unlike the features of the concept of besovstvo discussed in the first article of the cycle (end of time, extinction and chaos), mainly specifying metaphysical aspects of the writer’s idea, the features of rush-down and spinning are related to the actualization of historical and philosophical aspects of the content. They insert the events in the space of the Russian history by turning them into one of the stages of the struggle between Devil and God in people’s souls. Thus, the representation of the concept besovstvo in the space and time of The Devils has a complex structure including five features that contribute to the axiological content in the poetics of the novel. The authors declare no conflicts of interests
