Primary atomization systems do not usually provide the droplet size small enough for complete evaporation in a single process cycle. Secondary atomization of droplets resulting in puffing and micro-explosion plays a pivotal role. This research analyzes the critical conditions leading to the puffing or micro-explosion of composite droplets containing water as a model of a low-boiling liquid and fuels (kerosene and its components) as a model of a high-boiling flammable liquid. Internal factors like the degree of water core superheating and the volume of the superheated liquid in a composite droplet were found to be crucial for the characteristics of droplet breakup. The critical values of external input parameters (gas temperature, gas flow velocity, initial droplet sizes, flammable liquid type and volume fraction) were determined for puffing and micro-explosion of composite liquid droplets. The water core superheating degree was measured using a combination of a fast-response National Instruments system and a set of fast-response thermocouples together with the Laser Induced Fluorescence method. The values of dimensionless criteria (Ohnesorge, Kutateladze, Graetz, Nusselt, Sherwood, Prandtl, Reynolds, capillary, Fourier, Stanton, Lewis, Bond, Jakob, and Weber numbers) were obtained corresponding to droplet puffing and micro-explosion
