Summary:Title screen
Among the numerous modern methods for surface modification of materials, a good promise is demonstrated by the surface irradiation with concentrated charged particle flows. Therefore, a special attention is given to treatment of materials and surfaces with low-energy high-current electron beams (LEHCEBs). Using a LEHCEB treatment it is possible to control the phase composition and the strength properties of subsurface layers of not only metals and alloys, but also ceramic structures. The studies carried out by the authors demonstrated that a LEHCEB irradiation of the corundumzirconia ceramics gives rise to a phase (m>t) transformation of zirconium dioxide and a removal of the corundum phase from the subsurface layer due to high-intensity evaporation of aluminum. It is also challenging to study the influence of LEHCEBs on the microstructural state of the surface of “pure” Al2O3. The purpose of this work is to examine the effect of LEHCEBs on the microstructural state of subsurface layers of alumina ceramics.
