Theoretical and experimental studies of Cherenkov light in the optical range are reported. Our results demonstrate that Cherenkov light can be used for measuring the angular divergence of a charged particle beam. In this experiment, Cherenkov light is generated by an electron beam with 6-MeV kinetic energy passing through a tilted planar quartz target. The initial beam divergence is extracted from the measured dependence of Cherenkov light intensity on the target tilt angle. The experimental results obtained with the 0.3-, 0.7-, and 1-mm-thick targets agree with theoretical predictions.
