The integration of renewable energy sources is one of the promising directions in the development of modern electric power systems. However, the use of such facilities is associated with a number of issues, which are sufficiently critical for both the integrated facilities themselves and the existing power systems. One of these problems is a significant change in the behavior of transients in the power systems with a large share of renewables. This fact is primarily associated with a decrease in the total inertia of the system due to the introduction of converter-connected generation based on renewable energy sources, in particular, integration of Type-4 wind turbine generators. The appropriate tuning of automatic voltage regulators and power system stabilizers of synchronous generators installed at conventional power plants taking into account actual operating conditions can be proposed as a solution to indicated issue to enhance stabilization of power systems with high renewable energy penetration. The article suggests using the Hybrid Real-Time Power System Simulator to implement adequate and comprehensive tuning for such automation.
