| Summary: | Title screen The influence of Ta alloying on the structure and mechanical characteristics of Ti[1-x]Al[x]N coatings deposited on commercially pure titanium substrates by d.c. magnetron sputtering was studied by X-ray diffraction and nanoindentation. The fracture behavior of Ti[1-x-y]Al[x]Ta[y]N coatings with different Ta content was in-situ monitored with a digital camera followed by detailed observation of the cracking patterns by scanning electron microscopy. It is found that the evolution of the cracking patterns in the coatings passes through three distinct stages and is strongly dependent on the residual stress arising in the coatings during deposition. |
