| Summary: | Title screen A technique for determining the fracture toughness of materials on the base of the test data of small-size specimens with a chevron notch is proposed. The brittle ceramics ZrO[2] + 3% Y[2]O[3] were tested by the wedge method. The correct transformation from applied wedging force to the bending force of the ceramic chevron-notched specimens, taking into account the deformation of ligament and the friction coefficient between the wedge and the specimen is made. New experimental results are given for ceramics ZrO[2] + 3% Y[2]O[3]. The loading diagram of brittle ceramic discover nonlinear stage of deformation. Inelastic deformation is closely related to crack origin and its growth in chevron-notched zone. The evolution of the fracture toughness characteristics was investigated for all stages of crack growth. The critical stress intensity factor and the specific fracture energy have been estimated.
