This article presents the concept of a "core competence" and a practical problems and their place in theeducational process. Describes the activities, carried out at the Tomsk Polytechnic University, which contributeto the formation of the core competences of engineering students. It is shown if a student performs practicalproblems within the conference week He learns more deeply as the substantive knowledge and skills as well asprofessionally relevant knowledge and skills.
