Summary:Title screen
The influence of exposure to supercurrent ion beams (SIB) on the structure of the high speed steel P6M5, the T14K8 hard alloy, and the tungstenless alloys KHT-16 and TH-20 has been investigated. A recrystallized layer (being amorphous in the limiting case) reformed in the near surface region. Its thickness is a few tens of microns which exceeds the range of the SIB in the material. SIB-induced structure modifications resulted in the following changes of the material properties: the microhardness increased by a factor of 1.5-2, and the wear resistance increased by a factor of 1.8-3.5. To investigate the surface layers, we used secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), positron annihilation (PA), X-ray analysis and metallography.
