The effect of electric potential (< 5 V) on the microhardness of metallic materials has been investigated. The reversal of microhardness sign is found to occur in a metal depending on its Hall constant, i.e. polarity of conductivity. Thus aluminum, cobalt and zinc possessing n-type conductivity have Hall constants of negative sign, while zirconium and Fe-3%Si alloy possessing p-type conductivity have Hall constants of positive sign. It is found that due to the action of electric potential, the microhardness of the former group of metals will decrease, whilethe microhardness of the latter group of metals will increase. It is likely that the extent of change in the microhardness of a metal under the action of electric field is determined by the magnitude of applied potential, the absolute value of its Hall constant as well as its physicochemical properties.
