A silicate-containing hydroxyapatite coating was deposited on a titanium substrate by means of radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The morphology and elemental composition of the coating were studied by scanning electron microscopy equipped with EDX-analyzer. The adhesion strength of the film on substrate was estimated using a scratch test. A critical load, the load at which the first coating defects appear, was determined by the first small jump on the acoustic emission signal, as well as on the friction force. The obtained results suggest that the failure mode of the present coating is mainly dominated by cohesive strength of deposited film.
