Using <111> single crystals of Hadfield steel Fe-13Mn-1.3C (wt. %), the deformation mechanisms and traces of plastic flow on specimen surfaces were investigated under uniaxial compression at room temperature. From the beginning of plastic flow, a nucleation and evolution of localized shear bands were detected. Shear banding is closely related to the structural anisotropy of pre-existing deformation mechanism. Increasing of the strain rate from [...] suppresses localized shear bands due to change in the morphology of the slip and mechanical twinning activation. Formation of shear bands is assisted by multiple slip, whereas, twinning or single slip will suppress them.
