Among the ways of material surface modifying the method of ionic bombardment is widely used and very perspective. Unlike traditional treatments such processing includes simultaneously radiating, thermal and mechanical influence. In the present work the influence of Zr+ion beams irradiation on structure and mechanical properties of RUSFER-EK 181 steel was investigated. It was shown that processing of samples of RUSFER-EK 181 steel by Zr+beams leads to formation of thermally stable multilayered structure consisting from nanocrystalline surface layer and high defective near-surface layer. Such change of a structural and phase condition of samples surface causes substantial growth of mechanical characteristics of the material.
