Summary:The monograph is devoted to a historical and scientific investigation of the problems concerning the legacy of radiation catastrophe at the Chernobyl NPP. The authors analyze and define the main historical prerequisites of the catastrophe and its consequences basing on substantially documented data and their personal experience of direct participation in operation and the state safety inspection of the nuclear power utilization units and in liquidation of the consequences of this catastrophe. Another goal of this publication is to present an independent historical and technical evaluation of the state of nuclear and radiation safety of the uranium-graphite nuclear reactors (production and power ones) operating on the post-Soviet area.Presented materials may be used to reveal the weak points in the nuclear and radiation safety of the nuclear power units, to analyze the errors committed during the nuclear facilities' operation, the storage of radioactive waste and spent fuel, to improve the regulatory basis of the nuclear power engineering safety, and to make the public aware of the nuclear and radiation safety state at the operating nuclear power utilization units and of the consequences of the nuclear power usage.This edition counts on specialists and those who are interested in historical and technical problems concerning the provision of nuclear and radiation safety at the nuclear power facilities.The publication is supported by Green Cross (Switzerland) and the Embassy of Finland in Russia.
