Summary:It is shown that inhomogeneous polarization of insulation gap under electrical field due to sharp changing in the permittivity and/or conductivity at the interface 'main dielectric-barrier' is one of possible reasons of a barrier effect in dielectrics. Influence of preliminary polarization of thin polyethylene terephthalate barriers on the breakdown voltage of air gap with needle-plane configuration under AC and DC voltage is discovered
