Summary:Title screen
In this study, plates from the Ni-15%Fe-4%Mo-1%Mn permalloy and the 08 mild steel with thicknesses of 0.2 and 0.3 mm, respectively, were joined by small-scale resistance spot welding using an advanced power source capable of providing any preset current–time modes. The use of main current pulses with amplitudes of 1.4-2.2 kA and durations of 4-16 ms made it possible to form nuggets of acceptable diameters without an expulsion in most cases. Preheating of welding zones at an amplitude of ~ 1 kA and a duration of 3-4 ms stabilized heat input, reducing the variations in both sizes of the nuggets and tensile shear strengths of the joints. Additional slow cooling stages decreased dispersions of the tensile shear strengths of the joints. However, the average fracture energy values were also reduced. Element distributions in the nuggets, phase compositions, lattice microdistortions and fracture mechanisms were similar in all studied cases
