Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is a critical non-contact optical method for strain and deformation analysis in harsh environments such as high-temperature nuclear applications. However, its accuracy under extreme conditions remains challenged by speckle pattern instability, surface oxidation, and out-of-plane motion. In this study, we evaluate 2D-DIC limitations through real experimental testing of ceramic, steel, and copper specimens under temperatures up to 390°C. A well-validated open-source DIC code (iCorrelate-2D vision) was used to address errors induced by speckle degradation, thermal oxidation, and specimen buckling. The obtained results show that laser-generated speckles on the surface of the steel sample fail at 205°C because of surface oxidation, whereas natural speckle patterns on ceramics offer accurate strain measurements up to fracture (112°C). Out-of-plane creep of the thin copper sheets resulted in fully inaccurate results. As a result of this research, suggestions and recommendations to mitigate DIC limitations under high temperature are given, such as enhanced correlation algorithms, 3D-DIC for buckling scenarios, and oxidation-resistant coatings. These results contribute to the structural safety evaluation in energy applications by offering useful recommendations and guidelines for DIC implementation in harsh environments such as nuclear facility monitoring and high-temperature material testing
