| Summary: | Title screen Digital Image Correlation (DIC) has become indispensable for non-contact strain measurement in civil and mechanical engineering, yet its accuracy critically depends on user-defined input parameters. While parameters like subset size are often standardized, the interpolation method—a rarely examined factor—significantly impacts strain field reliability. This work addresses this gap by proposing a novel comparative analysis of three interpolation algorithms (Bi-cubic, cubic, and spline) in 2D DIC, using speckled-image datasets from real experiments. Following guidelines issued by the International Digital Image Correlation Society (iDICs) for fixed parameters, strain fields were computed for all cases and compared visually and quantitatively. The results demonstrated that bi-cubic interpolation is the best choice for DIC surface inspection under dynamic loading, because it reduces errors in edges and highstrain areas. Spline interpolation provided inaccurate results in the edges of the sample which deviated by up to 12% from validated results, whereas cubic interpolation introduced deviations in distorted areas because of the missing data due to speckle distortion during tension of the sample. These results improve measurement quality in applications such as structural health monitoring by providing new useful suggestions for interpolation selection.
