Turbulent melting patterns in gallium based energy storage systems

| Summary: | Title screen This paper presents a novel hybrid numerical approach for melting/solidification problems. The mathematical model proposed in this study couples mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann equations with a macroscopic energy equation. The melting front is tracked via the enthalpy method. The numerical solver imitates the direct numerical simulation technique and allows to perform simulation under laminar and turbulent flow behavior. The melting patterns of a gallium inside an energy storage system were analyzed in a range of the Rayleigh numbers of . It was found that the melting of gallium had similar patterns when varying the Rayleigh number. An increase in the Ra decreased the time of conduction melting. The value of buoyancy force determined the number of convective rolls at the initial moments of time.
