Puffing and microexplosion of composite liquid droplets under microwave heating: Experimental research and mathematical modeling

| Summary: | Title screen This study presents experimental and theoretical findings on the characteristics of puffing and microexplosion of composite liquid droplets with contrasting permittivities under microwave heating. Experiments were conducted using a model microwave waveguide. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the heating, evaporation, and explosive breakup of composite liquid droplets with water as the core and rapeseed oil, kerosene, or methanol as the film. Parametric studies varied droplet radii from 0.01 to 1 mm, microwave electric field strengths from 2∙104 to 4∙104 W/m, and water volume fractions from 2 to 10 vol% to match the conditions of advanced microwave reactors. Dimensional and dimensionless analyses of experimental and modeling results yielded approximations for the relationships governing puffing and microexplosion of composite liquid droplets under microwave heating.
