Simulation study on the performance of LaNi5-Based solid state hydrogen storage tanks for fuel cells

| Summary: | Title screen Metal hydride (MH) tanks can be coupled with hydrogen fuel cell systems, making hydrogen absorption and constant-flow hydrogen desorption performance enhancement crucial issues for hydrogen storage tank application. The heat transfer structure of the MH tank is one of the key factors affecting its performance. In this work, a mathematical model for AB5 series hydrogen storage tank was developed to optimize the heat transfer structure. To construct the model, the thermodynamic and kinetic equations of AB5-type hydrogen storage alloys (La–Ce–Ni–Co–Mn) were developed. The temperature and reaction fraction curves by simulation agree well with the experiment results, confirming the numerical model's reliability. Based on this model, the heat transfer structure of MH tank was optimized. The optimal fin pitch was determined to be 10 mm and the fin thickness was 0.3 mm. The optimized fin structure increased the constant-flow hydrogen desorption capacity by 5.38 % while reducing the fin volume by 70 %.
