Water is quite often added to liquid and composite fuels used in power plants for cutting down harmful emissions. Water plays a crucial role in the kinetic characteristics of fuel ignition. The present study was undertaken using two experimental setups to determine ignition delay times of model and typical liquid fuels (as illustrated by kerosene, isooctane and n-decane) when adding different volumes of water to them. Following the experiments, the effect of water on the thermal and chemical aspects of ignition delay times was identified. Conditions were reproduced when fuel ignited with water present in the chamber in the form of single droplets, in mixtures with fuel and as part of the gas–vapor mixture. Parametric research was carried out into the effect of water on the fuel ignition kinetics, when varying input parameters in wide ranges corresponding to industrial plants. It was established that the fragmentation of a heterogeneous fuel droplet significantly affects its heating, evaporation, ignition and burnout conditions
