The purpose of the study was to conduct research of archival documents on rewarding the soldiers and officers of the 24th Army of the Don Front, who took part in the Battle of Stalingrad, as well as to identify problematic aspects and promising areas of study of historical sources characterizing the use and development of the USSR award system during the Great Patriotic War. The set of sources used in the work included several types of archival documents posted on the “Memory of the People” Internet portal. Mostly, the sources of this study were archival documents on the awarding of the soldiers and officers of the 24th Army excelled during the Battle of Stalingrad. Among them there are the orders of the command of the 24th Army of the Don Front, orders of the commanders of the units that were part of this army, the decrees of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet, issued both in war and in post-war period. The scope and nature of the sources determined the specificity of the methodological basis of the research. In the course of the study, statistical analysis methods were used to process the content of award documents, as well as a comparative historical research method, which made it possible to identify the specifics of using the award system in late 1942 - early 1943, the causes and trends of its development. During the research of the award system functioning and its influence on the soldiers and officers of the Red Army, the most important feature of any military collective was taken into account, namely that its organization was strictly hierarchical, and the position of a soldier in this hierarchy was clearly determined by his rank, military specialty and official position. The application of the method of statistical analysis and the generalization of data on the military occupational specialty and official position of the awarded military personnel made it possible to group the results of processing the contents of orders and to reveal the relationship between the intensity of awarding military personnel, their official position and the military specialty of an awarded. The establishment of these dependencies allowed identifying some trends and features in the application of the USSR award system during the Great Patriotic War. The authors can state that the USSR award system, which mainly developed in the pre-war period, by the end of 1942 ceased to meet the needs of the time and did not correspond to the scale of the events of the war. It was necessary to make changes to the system of its functioning. Many problematic aspects in the study of the history of the USSR award system can be reconstructed based on the documents presented on the “Memory of the People” Internet portal. The study allowed to identify a number of gaps in the array of documents that could not be eliminated without further work on the search, study and publication of archival documents devoted to the events of the Great Patriotic War.
