The article studies publicistic writings by Fyodor Sologub in terms of his ideas on creative writing and the role it plays in the life of a particular person and whole society. The article deals with both published and unpublished texts. Sologub considers art an absolute, which is essential to preserve and develop human nature. Art requires solitude, which implies getting rid of fuss and routine; it goes without any requirements or practical usefulness. The life is sustained and organized by "dreamers" rather than "practical doers". Dreaming is not an idle entertainment, it is absolutely necessary for life since dreaming reveals creative potential, which ensures development of both science and art. An introvert mindset tends to be much more creative than an extrovert one, as the former is inclined to reflection and speculation based on personal experience. Art takes priority over the life and regulates it. Art can contribute to life interpretation if reading is regarded as a responsible activity and involves creativity as an instrument to self- and global awareness. The general reader, as well as the contemporary literary critic, fails to be the reader of great depth. The general reader is always in search of pleasure; they interpret the books they have read based on their individual mood and emotions. The critic, who always has a particular concept, tries to impose it on the original piece of writing, which makes it impossible to creatively interpret the text comprehending its depth and beauty. As well as science and religion, literature aims to provide people with the inner logic of the world and meaning of their existence. However, unlike science and religion, which tend to present ideas in declarative forms, literature induces dialogue-oriented reading. In a crisis situation, when positivism paradigm in science and Orthodox faith were compromised, and common knowledge was discredited, only in art could a person make an attempt to comprehend the world. Sologub describes different scenarios of interaction between fiction and reality - evolution, revolution, and catastrophe. The sustainable development of society takes place when reality does not oppose to art and people step by step are broadening their horizons. A revolutionary scenario develops in the situation when a piece of art falls beyond the scope of audience's expectations, which can also be affected by outer forces. When an artwork is neglected or destroyed, there are symptoms of societal collapse, which inevitably leads to the demise of the whole civilization. The author declares no conflicts of interests
