| Summary: | Title screen Magnesium-aluminum spinel MgAl2O4 (MAS) and cubic zirconia stabilized with yttrium oxide Y2O3-ZrO2 (YSZ) ceramics are currently the most promising optical materials. Herein, a series of multilayer YSZ/MAS ceramics doped with rare-earth (RE) oxides (CeO2 and Eu2O3) were consolidated using Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique. The peculiarities of the SPS process and microstructure have been studied in detail. It is shown that in order to improve the quality and minimize the residual porosity of YSZ:RE/MAS:RE ceramics, the SPS process should be carried out at low heating rates (up to 10 °C/min) and increased duration of isothermal holding. The sintering temperature is limited to no more than 1450 °C to minimize grain growth. The thermal behavior of the components has to be taken into account to form quality multilayer ceramics. The effect of YSZ influence on the impurity subsystem of the conjugate material was found. Photo- and cathodoluminescent investigations are shown the tunable emission properties from “greenish” to “yellowish-red” color for YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.01Eu and YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.1Ce ceramics before and after atmospheric annealing, respectively. A positive effect of annealing in air atmosphere on the photoluminescence efficiency was demonstrated. The photoluminescence (PL) efficiency for YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.1Ce and YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.01Eu ceramics was about 0.2 % and 0.5 %, respectively. After annealing, the PL efficiency increases significantly to 11.3 % for YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.1Ce and to 7.6 % for YSZ:10Eu/MAS:0.01Eu ceramics.
