Thermal plasma melting was applied to mixtures of MgO, Al2O3 and Tb4O7 to synthesize the MgAl2O4:Tb3+ (0.1–10 % wt. Tb4O7) luminescent ceramics series. Coarse-grained spinel materials (0.1–1 mm) with preferred crystal orientation were obtained. Structural, morphological (XRD and SEM) and spectroscopic (cathodoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy) analysis were used to investigate the influence of Tb4O7 content on ceramics phase composition, cell parameter of MgAl2O4:Tb3+, the inversion degree, and luminescent properties. It was found that the thermal plasma synthesized spinel ceramics exhibit a non-controlled inversion degree. The formation of TbAlO3 as a by-product was observed in materials containing more than 1 wt% of Tb4O7. It was demonstrated that the thermal plasma melting method could be potentially applied for fast preparation of MgAl2O4:Tb3+ luminescent ceramics
