Özet:The paper describes the state of water resources, chemical composition, and quality of surface water and groundwater in the Russian Federation. It analyzes the challenges related to water pollution and possible ways to address them, including the problem of eutrophication of water bodies in the western part of Russia and water logging of vast territories in Siberia, point and nonpoint pollution sources, and wastewater treatment technologies. It has been revealed that the uncontrolled inflow of anthropogenic pollutants into water bodies significantly affects chemical composition of water within the studied area, thus, contributing to the increase in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), as well as organic substances. In addition, it describes the peculiarities of water resource management in the Russian Federation and outlines the methodology for addressing water resource challenges ranging from water body monitoring, management, and planning to the payments for negative impact on the environment. The trends in surface runoff and water quality, as well as measures to reduce environmental impact, have also been examined.
