| Summary: | Title screen Communication of the defect cavity with the medium surrounding the test object is critical for implementation of liquid penetrant testing techniques. Therefore, the test surface is pre-cleaned prior to the penetrant application to provide liquid access deep into defects with contaminated mouths. The faster and more completely the defects are filled with liquid, the more effective the control process. It is known that the better the inner surface of the defect is wetted, the deeper the liquid penetrates into the defect, and the lower the liquid viscosity, the faster the process proceeds. It was experimentally proven that when polar liquids move through ultrathin quartz capillaries with sizes less than 1 µm, the effective viscosity increases significantly. However, a number of other factors affect the penetration kinetics, such as the sample material, surface purity and roughness, and liquid density and wetting angle. Thus, the study attempted to determine the impact of the size effect of the liquid viscosity on absorption kinetics (the depth of liquid penetration into defect cavities and the time), with regard to the liquid parameters, capillary size, and surface roughness.
