The radiation treatment of grains against fungal contamination is a modern way to prolong the postharvest life of the product. Grains of the wheat variety Irene naturally infected by Fusarium spp., Bipolaris sorokiniana and Alternaria spp. were treated using pulsed (0.5 µs) X-ray irradiation (280 keV) with a high dose rate (up to 40 kGy/s). A dose-dependent effect of irradiation on fungal contamination of grains was observed. We showed that a dose of 1.5 kGy led to the total disinfection of wheat from fungi while wheat seed germination was reduced from 79.0% to 12.7%.
