Magnetohydrodynamic instabilities of various types develop in the current-carrying plasma. One type of instability is the formation of filaments – individual current channels. In this paper, based on the methods of small perturbation theory, we analyze the development of thermal instabilities leading to the formation of filaments. Theoretical results are compared with experimental data on compression of plasma-puff liners obtained on an IMRI-5 generator.
