| Summary: | Title screen Virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) is a superior class of oscillator for high power microwave (HPM) generation. With many advantages, the vircator has low efficiency (experimentally ~15%). The following major factors cause low efficiency; low interaction between electromagnetic (EM) wave and beam, and electron loss in the form of drifting electrons. In order to reduce the loss of electrons and increasing the beam and EM wave interaction, this work is one step forward to our recent novel approach to form the second virtual cathode (VC2) by using drifting electrons as a wall charge. The ZP is sensitive to its designed frequency. When VC2 is formed the main frequency is changed with its position, and conducting (metal) opaque zone behaves as an obstacle for the microwave propagation at the new frequency. At the optimal position, ZP behaves as a lens as well as a reflector. On the other hand, the opaque floating zones with insulating material (glass) also contributed to forming VC2 and suitable for the power enhancement (no diffraction) by VC2 at new frequencies. In this case, it behaves only as a reflector and flexible to change its position. |
