The results of field and theoretical studies of the harmonic interaction between two powerful converter substations Vyborgskaya and Rauma in MIDC system are described. It is shown that harmonic currents which are not filtered properly at one converter substation can propagate over the power network and be amplified at distant converter substation. In particular, the commissioning of the HVDC power transmission Fenno-Scan has affected the current psophometric value in 400 kV AC power system adjacent to Vyborgskaya back-to-back. The efficiency of a two-level harmonic filtration system is compared with a single-level system. Method of the propagation of harmonic currents in a network based on the network frequency characteristics is used. The paper also describes the influence of the 150 Hz corona harmonic current on the substation equipment.
