In this work we study the possibility of synthesizing silicon nanopowders from silicon monoxide with particles from 7 to 20 nm in size using a chemicothermal method. The nanopowders are studied with the help of X-ray phase and X-ray structural analysis, electron scan microscopy, and spectrophotometry. The value of the specific surface of nanopowders has been determined and a preliminary estimation of the prospects for using silicon nanopowders in biological applications has been carried out. One promising potential domain for the applications of the silicon nanopowders studied is their use as UV filters for biological purposes, in particular, in sunscreen lotions due to their combination of the following useful properties: the total absorption of a hard UV, partial transmission of a soft UV (which is required for synthesizing vitamin D), transparency in optical and infrared ranges, and complete biological inertia.
