This article briefly presents an analysis of current and future changes in modern electric power systems (EPS). An analysis of the accident statistics of EPSs was carried out. Base on it was possible to identify that one of the main reason of severe accidents in power systems is incorrect action of relay protection and emergency automation (RPA). Among these reasons, about 20-30% are due to errors in RP settings. The article presents a structure of real-time software and hardware system for verifying the settings of relay protection devices (HSRT RP SV) and an algorithm for its functioning, which should significantly contribute to solving the problem of adequately setting up of modern digital protection devices. The main element of the HSRT RP SV is Hybrid Simulator of Power Systems (HRTSim) developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University.
