This research is devoted to the identification of modern trends in the application of smarttechnologies in higher education system (HES). The focus on this topic is reasoned by the fact that smarttechnologies present one of the leading directions of social development, based on the synthesis ofeducational, scientific, technological, industrial and other practices. Nowadays many Russian universitiesare actively using separate elements of Smart-education and are exploring the possibilities of furtherexpansion of their use. However, during the process of implementation of these projects, the barriers ofadministrative, financial, economic, industrial, scientific, technological and social nature occur. In thisregard, it is important to follow the current trends in the development of Smart Technologies in a highereducation system in general and in an engineering education system in particular. The study is based onmodern research data in the field of smart technologies application in education. The authors come to theconclusion that the model of smart university represents a key point of the strategy for the development ofhigher education system of the future. Since the development of smart technologies in universities isrelated to the field of engineering, nowadays the most favorable environment for further transformationsis created precisely in engineering universities, where these technologies will get better development.)
