N. N. Berberova's narrative fi ction is examined in the context of polemics between G. Adamovich and V. Khodasevich about the mission of the Russian émigré literature. Berberova's aesthetic strategy was determined by her borderline position in the émigré community (Khodasevich's wife and member of the younger generation of writers) and her ambition to become a “stitch” connecting two generation of the Russian emigration as well as Russian and Western culture. Life-like documentary forms of her works are threaded with hidden literariness; Berberova's prose is mythological, allusive, intertextual and meta-textual and was built following the laws of the myth, literary laws and Symbolists' panaesthetic notion.
