| Samenvatting: | Title screen Using the PIC-code KARAT, the geometryof a relativistic backward-wave oscillator(BWO) with a resonant reflector was calculated foran 18 kA beam current, an 850 kV diode voltage,and a 5 T guide magnetic field. For the mean diameterof the slow-wave structure (SWS) 1.6 timesgreater than the radiation wavelength, the predictedmicrowave power at ? 9.2 GHz was 5.7 GWwith 37% power efficiency. The estimation wasmade of the maximum RF electric field at the SWSsurface for the set limit of the microwave power. Itwas shown that the threshold of the explosive electronemission responsible for the electron-ionplasma appearance and the oscillation suppressionis reached at the collector end of the device. Experimentalstudies of the relativistic BWO demonstratedefficient oscillation with a peak power of4.3–5.3 GW, an efficiency of 31–22% and a microwavepulsewidth of ? 20 ns in a 4.5 T guide magneticfield. The oscillation frequency was 9.4 GHz.In all operating modes, no effect of pulse shorteningwas observed. |
