Results of testing of a novel thermoacousticdetector for registration of microwavepulses with 3 to 120 ns duration at wavelengths 0.8and 3 cm are presented. Operation of the detectoris based on effect of acoustic signal generationwhen microwave pulses are absorbed in the layeredstructure: radiotransparent substrate – absorber– liquid. Thin metallic film of nanometerthickness sputtered onto the substrate is used as anabsorber. Transformation of microwave radiationinto acoustic pulse is produced in the film and inthe liquid contacting with the film. It is shown thatfor the pulse of 120-ns duration the signal waveformdetected by the thermoacoustic detector iscompletely matched the signal of microwave detectorbased on a lamp diode. A response of the thermoacousticdetector to the shorter pulses (3 and5 ns) is represented in a form of pulse with 18-nsduration that is defined by a limited frequencybandwidth of the acoustic transducer.
