A study was made of the nucleation, formation and propagation of Chernov-Lüders bands in welds. The nucleation of Chernov-Lűders bands is found to occur at the border of regions in which material is characterized by structure and phase inhomogeneity. The kinetics and morphology of Chernov-Lüders bands also differs significantly within such regions. It is also found that the Chernov-Lüders band front would come to a halt at the border of regions in which material is characterized by structure and phase inhomogeneity. In this case, the band front would become a new source of band nucleation.
