The degree of grafting of styrene monomer to a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer film matrix by bombardment with 27-MeV helium ions has been studied. The grafting of styrene was carried out by two methods, the direct irradiating with helium ions the polymer immersed in a styrene monomer solution and using the a “postradiation effect” when the polymer has been irradiated in a vacuum, air, or argon atmosphere. The experimental dependences of the degree of grafting on the absorbed dose, irradiation medium, and grafting-solution the composition are presented. The results of microscopic, IR and UV spectroscopic investigations are reported. It has been shown that the direct grafting of styrene onto the PVDF films results in higher degrees of grafting compared with those obtained using the postradiation effect.
