Summary:Oxidation of diphenylmethanol, diphenylmethyl acetate, and diphenylmethyl trifluoroacetate with dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of electrophilic acylating species involves mainly activation of DMSO as S-nucleophile. In the presence of KBr and sulfuric acid, an alternative oxidation pathway prevails, where DMSO acts as O-nucleophile.
