The mechanisms of cracking and subsequent delamination of the coatings under thermal cycling, are revealed. It is shown that during thermal cycling of SiAlN coatings, deposited on the initial substrate, occurs cracking of coatings and growth of silicides by means of uphill diffusion of copper atoms. Nanostructuring of the surface layers of the Cu substrate by means of ion-beam treatments leads to increasing of coating adhesion and prevent diffusion Cu atoms from substrate to coating.
